SpaceCore server traffic: what limits apply and how they are counted

A server in violet space with two incoming and two outgoing data streams
Server traffic is the sum of all data it receives and sends over a month.

Traffic is the volume of data a server receives and sends over a given period. When visitors open your site, download files, or connect to an application, that data passes through the server network channel. The sum of everything the server received and sent over a month is its traffic.

Traffic terms differ depending on the type of service. Some servers have a monthly limit, others have unlimited traffic, and in some cases the parameters depend on the specific plan. Below we break down how things work for each type of SpaceCore server, where to view statistics, and what happens when the limit is exceeded.

This article describes the general traffic terms for different service types. The exact parameters of a specific plan are always shown at checkout, so before buying it makes sense to check the card of the chosen server.

How traffic over the limit is paid for. On Virtual Servers the first 20 TB per month are already included, and each additional terabyte costs 1 euro and is charged from your balance automatically - keep a small reserve on the balance so the speed is not throttled when you go over the limit. On other services, such as Hetzner Cloud and dedicated servers, additional traffic is purchased separately, most often through the plan settings. If the right option is not obvious, check with support. On Contabo traffic is unlimited, so there is nothing extra to pay.

Traffic on Virtual Servers

Virtual Servers are the core virtual servers of SpaceCore. They run on the company's own hardware.

The same traffic terms apply to all Virtual Servers plans:

  • each server is allocated 20 TB of traffic per month
  • the limit is counted in total - incoming and outgoing traffic are added together
  • the billing period starts on the 1st of each month
  • extra traffic over the limit costs 1 euro per 1 TB

Incoming traffic is the data the server receives, for example uploading files to the server or inbound requests. Outgoing is what the server sends out: site pages to visitors, file delivery, application responses. To calculate the limit, both values are summed.

Incoming and outgoing traffic: an arrow into the server and an arrow out of it
The traffic limit is counted as the sum of two flows - incoming and outgoing.

For most projects 20 TB is a large reserve. Such a volume is usually enough for sites, applications, control panels, and services with average traffic. You can come noticeably close to the limit when actively serving heavy content - video, large files, or images.

Traffic on Hetzner Cloud VPS

Hetzner Cloud VPS are virtual servers from the European partner Hetzner. The traffic rule here is as follows:

  • most plans provide 20 TB of traffic
  • some plans may offer a higher traffic volume

There are no single terms for all Hetzner Cloud plans, so the exact traffic volume should be checked for the specific server. This information is shown when ordering the chosen plan.

Important: before ordering a Hetzner Cloud VPS, check the parameters of the exact plan you intend to take. That way you will know the exact traffic volume in advance and will not run into unexpected restrictions.

Traffic on Contabo VPS

Contabo servers are VPS from the provider Contabo, which SpaceCore offers as an official partner. The traffic terms here are the simplest:

  • on all Contabo plans traffic is unlimited
  • there are no limits on the volume of incoming and outgoing traffic

This is convenient for projects where the load is hard to predict in advance or where a lot of data is served. There is no need to watch a traffic counter or keep a reserve on your balance for it - there is simply no limit here that you could exceed.

Traffic on dedicated servers

Dedicated servers come in two categories: dedicated servers and servers with no setup fee. The traffic terms for them depend on the specific server and plan:

  • some servers have limited traffic
  • others have unlimited traffic

There is no single rule for all dedicated servers. The traffic terms need to be checked separately for the chosen configuration - as a rule, they are shown at checkout. If you still have questions about a specific server, you can always ask support before placing the order.

Where to view traffic statistics

For Virtual Servers services, you can view the traffic consumption statistics for each server in the control panel. Open the Virtual Servers section and click the Statistics button next to the server you need.

The control panel shows how much of the monthly limit has already been used.

Statistics help you see in advance that traffic is approaching the monthly limit and, if necessary, top up your balance to pay for the additional volume. This is especially useful for projects with growing or uneven load: you control consumption and do not run into a speed limit unexpectedly.

For other server types you can use dedicated tools that log traffic consumption right on the server - for example, for Linux. That way the data is the most accurate.

What happens when the traffic limit is exceeded

This section applies to Virtual Servers services. For other server types the terms differ, so the following should not be automatically applied to Hetzner Cloud, Contabo, or dedicated servers.

For Virtual Servers the order is as follows:

  • the monthly limit is 20 TB and is counted as the sum of incoming and outgoing traffic
  • the billing period starts on the 1st of each month
  • traffic over the limit is paid from the balance at the rate of 1 TB = 1 euro
  • if there are not enough funds on the balance, the balance may go negative
  • when the limit is exceeded, the server speed is throttled
  • after the debt is paid off, the speed returns to normal
A large, almost full data tank with a drop and a calendar icon representing the monthly traffic volume
20 TB per month is a large but finite reservoir that resets on the 1st.

To keep the server running without speed throttling, keep an extra amount on your balance to pay for traffic over the limit. Then when you go beyond 20 TB the additional volume is charged automatically, and the server keeps working normally.

Important: the speed throttling applied when the limit is exceeded is lifted once the balance is no longer negative. A pre-topped-up balance helps avoid a speed drop at the moment of peak load.

For other service types, the behavior when traffic runs out may differ: speed throttling or server suspension may be applied. It is worth clarifying the details with support.

Frequently asked questions about traffic

How is the traffic limit counted on SpaceCore VPS?

For Virtual Servers the limit is counted in total: incoming and outgoing traffic for the month are added together. The billing period starts on the 1st of each month, and the monthly volume is 20 TB per server.

What do incoming and outgoing traffic mean?

Incoming traffic is the data the server receives, for example uploading files to the server. Outgoing is what the server sends out: site pages, files, application responses. To calculate the limit, both values are summed.

Which SpaceCore servers have unlimited traffic?

Unlimited traffic applies to all Contabo VPS plans. Among dedicated servers, unlimited traffic is found on some configurations - this needs to be checked for the specific server. Virtual Servers and most Hetzner Cloud plans have a monthly limit.

How much does traffic over the limit cost?

For Virtual Servers, additional traffic costs 1 euro per 1 TB. It is charged from the balance automatically. For other server types the terms differ.

What happens if I exceed the traffic limit?

On Virtual Servers, when the limit is exceeded, additional traffic is paid from the balance. If there are not enough funds, the balance goes negative and the server speed is throttled. After the debt is paid off, the speed returns to normal.

Where can I see how much traffic has already been used?

For Virtual Servers, statistics are available in the control panel: the Virtual Servers section, the Statistics button next to the server you need. This way you can see the limit approaching in advance and top up your balance.
